Redox activity

reduction–oxidation · electron transfer

Electron donation and acceptance — the reason fulvic acid and humic substances can support mitochondrial electron transport and buffer oxidative stress.

01 · Definition

What it is

Redox is short for reduction–oxidation: the transfer of electrons between molecules. What makes humic substances biologically interesting is that they are redox-active in both directions — able to accept electrons and to donate them — which is unusual and useful.

02 · Mechanism

How it works

By donating electrons, fulvic acid can act as an antioxidant, quenching reactive species; by participating in electron transfer, it is proposed to support mitochondrial electron transport, with the dibenzo-α-pyrones studied as electron carriers. Honest framing: the environmental-chemistry evidence for redox capacity is strong; the clinical translation is mostly preclinical.
